Little Readers for Little Readers Volume I

The Humongous Burger

MATERIALS NEEDED: Tan, brown, green (two shades of green, if you have them), red, and yellow construction paper. Flesh and red tempra paint for the secret sauce. Sesame seeds are optional.

DUPLICATING INSTRUCTIONS: Make a single copy of the Little Reader. Use white-out or lay a piece of paper along the bound edge to remove binding marks . Remember the way you place the copy on the machine is the way it will be duplicated. If you are fussy about pages being exactly the same size, fold your first copy to make sure the pages line up exactly before duplicating a class set. Make enough copies for each child to have a book. You will want a copy to model in front of the class and at least two extra copies for your classroom library. Run these off on white ditto paper. Run burgers on brown construction paper. Run pickles on green construction paper (dark, if you have it). Run tomatoes on red construction paper. Run lettuce on green construction paper (light green, if you have it). Run cheese on yellow construction paper. (Each page will be sufficient for four children.) If you want the children to make a "hinged" burger on the cover revealing all the ingredients, you will need to duplicate enough for each child to have one more of each item.

VOLUNTEER PREPARATION: Please check to make sure items #1-8 have been completed before the children begin to produce their own copies.

BEFORE THE CHILDREN MAKE THIS BOOK: One or two weeks before the children make this book, introduce the text in the form of sentence strips (with a pocket chart) or make your own big book using 12" x 18" construction paper. The text is provided for you to enlarge on your copier.

Read together as a choral reading activity while pointing under the words until the children have memorized the text. (There are two different text pages each with a different ending. If you choose to enlarge the optional ending, be sure to make a copy and glue it to the last page in the student books.)

STUDENT MATERIALS: Scissors, glue and crayons.

GUIDED ACTIVITY: (The making of the child's copy) Do one or two pages per day. Use one of the copies and model one page at a time. Stop and allow the children to complete the page in their books. On pages 1-8 color the buns light brown. On page 2 cut out two tomatoes and glue onto circle. On page 3 color cheese lightly with a light orange crayon, cut out and glue onto the circle. On page 4 cut out pickles and glue on the bun. On page 5 cut out lettuce and glue. On page 6 go outside and place burger on the cement or blacktop. Use a brown peeled crayon and rub sideways on top of paper to create a bumpy "ground meat" look. Then cut burger out and glue on to the bun. On page 7 color secret sauce (let the children decide on the color) or for a great effect mix flesh tempra with a couple of dabs of red tempra to make a Thousand Island colored secret sauce. Place approximately 1/2 teaspoon in the center of each child's bun and let the children spread it, almost to edges of the bun, using their fingers. On page 8 the children draw their self-portraits. (On the back of page 8 "The End" may be written by the students, if you want them to.) On the cover: Option #1 Color the circle lightly with brown crayon. Add dots of white glue and sprinkle with sesame seeds. You may want to do this outdoors or over a cardboard box. Option #2 Brainstorm all the ingredients in the burger. Explain that if they were to put these on the cover they will need to do some problem solving. They will need to glue the largest items on first (or the tomatoes won't show). They might need to trim the cheese and lettuce into two pieces. You may want to model this process. A great visual clue would be to tape each item on the front board in order of how the children will glue them on their burgers. Then when they are finished they may add glue to the bun and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Model how to tape the bun at the top of the burger, so that they can lift it up and peek inside!

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES: Children keep this book in their cubbies for at least a week. Children read with a partner at least once a day. Ask a volunteer to use a class list and pull children out and listen to each one read (helping them touch below each word) before sending this Little Reader home.

When you do send this book home, tell the children their homework is to read it to their family at dinner!
