I Can Read Signs

MATERIALS NEEDED: Blue, red, yellow, green, white, purple and brown construction paper; white ditto paper;and popsicle sticks.

DUPLICATING INSTRUCTIONS: Make a single copy of the Little Reader. Use white-out or lay a piece of paper along the bound edge to remove binding marks. Remember the way you place the copy on the machine is the way it will be duplicated. If you are fussy about the pages being exactly the same size, fold your first copy to make sure pages line up exactly before duplicating a class set. Then make enough copies for each child to have a book. You will want a copy to model in front of the class and at least two extra copies for your classroom library. Run these off on white ditto paper. Run signs off on colors of construction paper indicated.

VOLUNTEER PREPARATION: Please check to make sure items #1-9 have been completed before the children begin to produce their own copies.

BEFORE THE CHILDREN MAKE THIS BOOK: One or two weeks before the children make this book, introduce the text in the form of sentence strips (with a pocket chart) or make your own big book using 12" x 18" construction paper. The text is provided for you to enlarge on your copier.

Read together as a choral reading activity while pointing under the words until the children have memorized the text.

STUDENT MATERIALS: Scissors, glue and crayons.

GUIDED ACTIVITY: (The making of the child's copy) Do one or two pages per day. Use one of the copies and model one page at a time. Stop and allow the children to complete the page in their books.

On page 1the students cut out both the MEN and WOMEN signs and glue to the page being careful not to cover the words. On page 2 the students cut out the BIKE XING sign and glue to the pole on the page being careful not to cover the words. On page 3the students cut out the POISON sign and glue to the page.On page 4 the students cut out the DON’T WALK, WALK sign and glue to the stop light pole. Next the students color the lights (red at the top, yellow/orange in the middle and green at the bottom). On page 5the students use brown construction paper rectangle to freehand cut a fence post and glue it vertically below the text. Next cut out the NO TRESPASSING and KEEP OUT signs and glue to the fence post. You may want the students to add some grass at the bottom using crayon. On page 6 the students cut out the STOP sign and glue it to the pole. On page 7 the students cut out the EXIT sign and glue it above the purple door. You may want to have them add a knob to the door.On the cover:the students cut out SCHOOL CROSSING sign and glue to the front cover.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES: Children keep this book in their cubbies for at least a week. Children read with a partner at least once a day. Ask a volunteer to use a class list and pull children out and listen to each one read (helping them touch below each word) before sending this Little Reader home.

When you do send this book home, tell the children their homework is to read a Little Reader every night!
