MATERLALS NEEDED: yellow or white Xerox paper; skin/flesh tones construction/manila paper (hands); light blue construction paper (desks and trash cans); blue Xerox paper.
OPTIONAL: Silver glitter glue or silver glitter.
DUPLICATING INSTRUCTIONS: Make a single copy of the Little Reader. Use white-out or lay a piece of paper along the bound edge to remove binding marks . Remember the way you I place the copy on the machine is the way it will be duplicated. If you are fussy about the pages being exactly the same size, fold your first copy to make sure pages line up exactly before duplicating a class set. Then make enough copies for each child to have a book. You will want a copy to model in front of the class and at least t~vo extra copies for your classroom library.
Run these off on yellow or white Xerox paper.
VOLUNTEER PREPARATION: Please look at # 1 (optional whistle glittering) and #8 (pre-cutting hands for students) and note on volunteer instructions your preference. Please look at page 5 trash can reproducibles and decide whether you want the children to simply color the trash can on page, or if you prefer, to use the reproducible provided. Please check to make sure items # 1-1 1 have been completed before the children begin to produce their own copies.
BEFORE THE CHILDREN MAKE THIS BOOK: One or two weeks before the children make this book introduce the text in the form of sentence strips (with a pocket chart) or make your own big book using 12" x 18" construction paper. The text is provided for you to enlarge on your copier.
Read together as a choral reading activity while pointing under the words until the children have memorized the text.
STUDENT MATERIALS: crayons; glue stick; white glue; bits of 13 clean trash (saved from snack) to glue inside trash can; and gold or silver glitter or gold or silver glitter glue.
GUIDED ACTIVITY: (Making of the child's copy) Do one or more pages per day. Use one of the student copies to model one page at a time, then stop and allow the children to complete the page in their books.
On the cover model pointing below each word while reading the text. Children read together chorally as they point below the words. Tell the children to "use 2 index fingers to frame the word know. Have them cover the letters k and w to reveal the other word no. Write name next to the word "By." On page 1 model coloring a self portrait. Glue pre-cut hands to paper with thumbs around heart (see sample page). If hands are not pre-cut, model cutting and gluing in place. On page 2 model pointing below each word while reading the text. Color chair. The children use a blue construction paper rectangle to freehand cut a desk. ( Cut a rectangle out of the bottom of the large rectangle forming what looks like a 2 legged desk.) Tell and show children to put glue on the table/desk, not on page 2. Align legs of table with front legs of chair. On page 3 children trace their own hand on corresponding skin colored construction/manila paper. Cut out. Put glue on hand not on page 3. You may choose to allow the children to decorate hand with jewelry, nail polish, etc. On page 4 if whistles have not been pre-glittered have children color them. On page 5 you 2 may choose to have children simply color the trash can and glue 3-5 pieces of trash inside oval at the top. Optional: You may want to have children cut out trash can. Glue 3-5 pieces of trash to oval first, then run glue along left, bottom and right sides. Place trash can on top leaving top open. On page 6 children color the picture of their teacher. On page 7 children color pictures of 3 friends. If they know how, color some red hearts around friends or supply a heart stamp. On page 8 children write ABC's, name, numbers, etc. on pages of small book. Glue back cover of small book to center of page. On the cover have children complete their self-portraits using crayons.
FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES: Children keep this book in their cubby for at least a week. Children read with a partner at least once a day. Ask a volunteer to use a class list and pull children out and listen to each one read (helping them touch below each word) before sending this Little Reader home.
When you do send this book home tell the children their homework is to read it to every person living in their home!
