My Scribble Book, I Know The Rules, Perfect Pizza, The Penguin Book, and The Bunny Book are all included in this volume.
Little Readers for Little Readers Vol. III is a teacher's manual that includes 5 beginning readers which can easily be made by young children and teachers. As the children themselves are the illustrators, they are empowered with the pride of ownership. After extensive use in the classroom the children are able to take their books home. Unlike other programs, our young reader can now read, and re-read, these books on a daily basis. This process bridges the gap between school and home. It may be used as a supplement to an existing reading adoption, or used solely as a reading program.
This compilation of our favorite Little Readers is organized by month, each child making one reader per month. Some of the books are integrated with science objectives, some with current math curriculum, so me are intended to expand sight word vocabulary and some are for the sheer joy of language and reading. All of the Little Readers have high interest and yet simple text. Each one has a unique ending, encouraging the young reader to anticipate and predict what the ending will bring.
This book includes color plates, so even the less artistic can see the simplicity of the finished illustrations. Unlike most commercial little books our Little Readers are made using a variety of media for the illustrations (materials which are readily available in all classrooms). Each Little Readers follows the same simple format:
- The teacher page tells the teacher exactly what is needed to make the book; how to set the stage before making the book; how to make the book, page by page; and finally what to do when the book is sent home.
- The volunteer page gives specific instructions to parent volunteers or classroom aides on what to do to prepare the Little Readers for the students.
- The text is provided for the teacher to enlarge and easily make a big book, pocket chart story, or a wall story.
- All templates, or masters, which are needed to make the book are included.
- Finally the child's copy to be reproduced is included.
This book provides colorful, and exciting beginning readers which can easily be made by children and teachers. We have been using these books in our Kindergarten classrooms and have seen children of all ability levels benefit from them as well as enjoy learning to read by reading.
